Original Photo

This is a photo manipulation in progress.  It’s really a challenge for me to settle on one particular direction to go in when there are endless possibilities.  So for now my photo model has golden eyes and neon red hair.

I’m using a method known as ‘vexelling’ which results in a vexel image.  You can describe a vexel as a combination of a raster and vector style.  The look is meant to look like vector art which is created with shapes, not pixels.  The method used to create this vexel look however, is through the use of a raster tool such as Photoshop.  Using the pen tool to create paths and employing many, many layers, you build up the image using shadows, light, tones, and colors.

Photo Manipulation

The fun comes with using your brushes and textures to create a surreal look.  I tend to create folders with layers that contain specific features.  With the click of cursor, I can switch out colors of hair, eyes, skin, without changing the textures, shapes, or shadows, etc.

ua home design

Home Page Design for UA

The home page of a website I designed using Photoshop. Done for an Owl Baby Media client. Also built HTML/CSS pages and javascript addons – all on Expression Engine platform. There are several more pages to this site that I’ll add as time permits.

Vista Compatibility Files and Pixel Blender

It seems that Vista never fails to entertain – yesterday’s little diversion was a game of hide-and-seek with a pbk file that I generated using Adobe’s Pixel Bender Toolkit. I had successfully compiled and run my little pixel blender filter which takes center coordinates and radius input parameters from the Photoshop (or Flash) user and [...]

Encaustic Lily

I have a new tool for my encaustic paintings. I’ve switched to using a torch instead of a heat gun to fuse the wax layers -it leaves a much nicer surface and gives a lot more control over the wax. I used cheesecloth on some areas of the petals to add an interesting texture. Still [...]

Encaustic Rose

Another encaustic practice painting. It’s a fun process learning about the properties of the encuastic paint colors. Alizarin Crimson from Enkaustikos® is a transparent color which can be made even more transparent by mixing it with with encaustic medium (which you can make yourself with filtered beeswax and damar resin). Layering a transparent Alizarin Crimson [...]

CSS Combinators

CSS Combinators (>,~,+)… sound powerful, and they are. Really, I should be out running in this gorgeous January weather, instead I’m playing with combinator combinations… lots of fun (I know, …pathetic). Color saturated nth-child pseudo-selectors next. Getting really excited about that tho…! Here is a very simple visual of some child/descendant/sibling relationships and which combinator [...]

jQuery Tooltips

jQuery provides endless creative possibilities.  With just a few well placed lines of HTML, CSS and javascript you can change the entire look and feel of your site.  Move your cursor across the white lily image to see a great little tooltip which you can add to any element of your site quite easily.

Thoughts on Perception and Art

What is art?  If art is about realism, why even create the images?   We have the camera to capture a view of reality to remind ourselves of our experiences.  If the purpose of art is to represent awareness then it seems redundant to create endless replicas of the obvious. Perhaps it is worthwhile to [...]

Vertical Forest with Dune Shack

Every day I pass a stretch of road that has some amazing tree lines. I decided it was worth pulling the car into the bushes and taking out the camera. When I got home I enhanced the contrast and vertical flow using the ink brush stroke tool from the PS CS4 filter gallery. Click the [...]

Encaustic Painting

I’ve been completely absorbed lately with encaustic painting which involves heating and fusing as well as painting with beeswax mixed with pigments. The medium is fascinating, it’s like working with the brilliance of oil paints combined with the fluidity and unpredictability of watercolor. Iv’e been working and re-working four paintings and as I learn new [...]
