Art Classes at The Victorian

The Victorian Whitinsville, MA

I’m excited to be one of several teaching artists at The Victorian in Whitinsville, Ma. The Victorian is a mecca of art and creativity, offering workshops in everything from watercolor, fairy gardens, and pottery, to encaustic painting, and creative writing (coming soon!). Reminiscent of a gracious English country home and steeped in local history, The Victorian mansion is located in the Historic Blackstone Valley.

Encaustic Workshop

Join me in The Victorian studio for an in-depth exploration of encaustic painting. Encaustic is one of the oldest forms of painting, with paintings surviving from the first century BC. This is the art of painting with pigments mixed with molten beeswax which not only acts as a natural preservative but also lends itself to embedding and collage. The results are luminous and organic and the possibilities for creativity are unique and endless. Class sizes are small – usually 6-8 students which makes for a personalized learning experience for students of all skill levels. Early registration is recommended due to the limited number of spaces.  Call Rebecca Wright at The Victorian to register: 774-239-3487, or email me if you have any questions.

Date: August 26-27, 10am-2:00pm (may go over)

Fee: $240 Materials Fee: $50  – Encaustic tools available for use during class.

Class Description:   In this workshop we will explore the exciting and versatile medium of encaustic. We’ll cover the basics, including history, safety, tools, and equipment. We’ll learn about encaustic painting skills, such as layering, fusing and embedding.  Then we’ll move on to techniques such as embedding, incising, collage, intarsia, (an inlay process where we will carve into the base layer and inlay with wax of a different color), and accretion, (a method of building 3D texture).  We’ll spend time practicing these techniques and then you’ll put your newly learned skills to work to create an encaustic collage painting embedded with poetry.  The centerpiece of this painting will be a piece of poetry or a saying that has meaning for you.  Your homework will be to bring your poem printed or handwritten clearly on a 3″x 3″ piece of paper.  The fonts, colors, and paper type are up to you!  Not to worry though, we’ll have a few printed poems on hand for you to choose from if you forget yours.  We’ll embed handmade papers in layers of encaustic medium to form the background of squares upon which your poem will float!  Encaustic painting is fluid and organic and the results will all be unique and a reflection of your creativity!
